"I visited Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم, and he صلى الله عليه وسلم was lying on a mat. I sat down and he drew up his lower garment over him and he had nothing (else) over him, and that the mat had left its marks on his sides. I looked with my eyes in the store room of Allah's Messenger I found only a handful of barley equal to one sa' and an equal quantity of the leaves of Mimosa Flava placed in the nook of the cell, and a semi-tanned leather bag hanging (in one side), and I was moved to tears (on seeing this extremely austere living of the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم), and he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Ibn Khattab, what wakes you weep? I said: Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم, why should I not shed tears? This mat has left its marks on your sides and I do not see in your store room (except these few things) that I have seen; Ceasar and Khusroes are leading their lives in plenty whereas you are Allah's Messenger. His chosen one, and that is your store! He said: Ibn Khattab, aren't you satisfied that for us (there should be the prosperity) of the Hereafter and for them (there should be the prosperity of) this world? I said: Yes.”

“I go back to my family and I find a date lying on my bed. I then take it up to eat it, but then I throw it away fearing that it may be a Sadaqa.”

“That Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم was the sublimest among people (in character) and the most generous amongst them and he was the bravest of men. One night the people of Medina felt disturbed and set forth in the direction of a sound when Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم met them on his way back as he had gone towards that sound ahead of them. He صلى الله عليه وسلم was on the horse of Abu Talha which had no saddle over it, and a sword was slung round his neck, and he was saying: There was nothing to be afraid of, and he صلى الله عليه وسلم also said: We found it (this horse) like a torrent of water (indicating its swift-footedness).”

“A man asked Bara' (b. 'Azib): Did you run away on the Day of Hunain. O, Abu Umara? He said: No, by Allah, The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم did not turn his back; (what actually happened was that) some young men from among his companions, who were hasty and who were either without any arms or did not have abundant arms, advanced and met a party of archers (who were so good shots) that their arrows never missed the mark. This party (of archers) belonged to Banu Hawazin and Banu Nadir. They shot at the advancing young men and their arrows were not likely to miss their targets. So these young men turned to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم while he was riding on his white mule and Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith b. 'Abd al-Muttalib was leading him. (At this) he got down from his mule, invoked God's help, and called out: I am the Prophet. This is no untruth. I am the son of 'Abd al-Muttalib. Then he deployed his men into battle array.”

“Once the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم distributed something (among his followers). A man said, "This distribution has not been done (with justice) seeking Allah's Countenance." I went to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and told him (of that). He became so angry that I saw the signs of anger oh his face. Then he صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on Moses, for he was harmed more (in a worse manner) than this; yet he endured patiently."

“That the Quraish had been anxious about the Makhzumi woman who had committed theft, and said: Who will speak to Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم about her? They said: Who dare it, but Usama, the loved one of Allah's Messenger So Usama spoke to him. Thereupon Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Do you intercede regarding one of the punishments prescribed by Allah? He then stood up and addressed (people) saying: O people, those who have gone before you were destroyed, because if any one of high rank committed theft amongst them, they spared him; and it anyone of low rank committed theft, they inflicted the prescribed punishment upon him. By Allah, if Fatima, daughter of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, were to steal, I would have her hand cut off."

“There was a man who used to stay in the dessert whose name was Zaahir. When he would come from the dessert he used to bring for him gifts and when he would go back the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to load him with gifts. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to say, “Zaahir is for us in the dessert and i am for him in the city.” The Prophetصلى الله عليه وسلم used to love him even though he was a ugly looking person.
One day the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم came to him while he was selling his things and caught him from behind. Zaahir could not see so he said, “leave me! Who is it?” When he turned, saw and found that it was the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, he started pressing his back more to the chest of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم not minding it any more.
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم started saying, “Who will buy this slave from me?”
He said, “O Messenger of Allah! You will find me very cheap.”
On this the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Before Allah you are not cheap” or he said, “Before Allah your are very precious””

“Once I was beating my servant, I heard a voice behind me (saying): Abu Mas'ud, bear in mind Allah has more dominance over you than you have upon him. I turned and (found him) to be Allah's Messenger I said: Allah's Messenger I set him free for the sake of Allah. Thereupon he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Had you not done that, (the gates of) Hell would have opened for you, or the fire would have burnt you.”
[NARRATED BY ABU MAS’UD AL-ANSARI رضي الله عنه RECORDED IN SAHEEH MUSLIM: 4088]

“I came to Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنه as he had granted freedom to a slave. He (the narrator further) said: He took hold of a wood or something like it from the earth and said: It (freedom of a slave) has not the reward even equal to it, but the fact that I heard Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم say: he who slaps his slave or beats him, the expiation for it is that he should set him free.”

“I saw Abu Dhar Al-Ghifari wearing a cloak, and his slave, too, was wearing a cloak. We asked him about that (i.e. how both were wearing similar cloaks). He replied, "Once I abused a man and he complained of me to the Prophetصلى الله عليه وسلم. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم asked me, 'Did you abuse him by slighting his mother?' He added, 'Your slaves are your brethren upon whom Allah has given you authority. So, if one has one's brethren under one's control, one should feed them with the like of what one eats and clothe them with the like of what one wears. You should not overburden them with what they cannot bear, and if you do so, help them (in their hard job)."

“…When Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم saw Quraish standing against him, he said, "O Allah! Help me against them by afflicting them with seven years of famine similar to the seven years (of famine) of Joseph. So they were afflicted with a year of drought that destroyed everything, and they ate bones and hides. (One of them said), "And they ate hides and dead animals, and (it seemed to them that) something like smoke was coming out of the earth. So Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet and said, "O Muhammad! Your people are on the verge of destruction! Please invoke Allah to relieve them." So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم invoked Allah for them (and the famine disappeared). He said to them. "You will revert (to heathenism) after that."

“My mother who was a polytheist came to me when he (the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) entered into treaty with, the Quraish (of Mecca). I inquired from the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم saying: Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم, there has come to me my mother and she is inclined towards me; should I show kindness to her? When he (the camel) saw Allah’s Messenger صلّى اللهُ عليه وسلّم he yearned and his eyes started flowing. Allah’s Messenger came to him and stroked his head (with his hand) so he kept quiet. He صلّى اللهُ عليه وسلّم said, ‘Who is the master of this camel? Whose camel is this?’ A young man from the Ansaar came and said, “It’s mine, O Allah’s Messenger صلّى اللهُ عليه وسلّم!” He صلّى اللهُ عليه وسلّم said, “Don’t you fear Allah about this beast of which Allah has made you the master.
