The Beautiful Names of Allah

1.      All the names of Allah are most beautiful

Allah says in the Qur'an in Surah Taha 20:8

اللَّهُ لا إِلَهَ إِلا هُوَ لَهُ الْأَسْمَاء الْحُسْنَى 

 “Allah! there is none worthy of worship but He! To Him belong the most Beautiful Names.”

2.      Call upon Allah (i.e. do Duaa to Him) by His most beautiful names

Allah says in the Qur'an in Surah al A’raf 7:180

وَلِلّهِ الأَسْمَاء الْحُسْنَى فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا

وَذَرُواْ الَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِي أَسْمَآئِهِ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ        

 “And to Allah belong the most beautiful names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.”

Allah says in the Qur'an in Surah al Isra 17:110

قُلِ ادْعُواْ اللّهَ أَوِ ادْعُواْ الرَّحْمَنَ أَيًّا مَّا تَدْعُواْ فَلَهُ الأَسْمَاء الْحُسْنَى  

“Say, "Call upon Allah or call upon ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful) . Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names."”

3.      The names of Allah in the Duaa of Prophet Muhammed صلى الله عليه وسلم

Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه  narrated,

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلّى اللهُ عليه وسلّم يَدْعُو عِنْدَ الْكَرْبِ

يَقُولُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ   

 “In times of difficulty Prophet Muhammed صلى الله عليه وسلم used to say, “There is none worthy of worship except Allah the Majestic, the Forbearing. There is none worthy of worship except Allah the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Magnificient Throne.” [RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI, BOOK OF INVOCATIONS 8:357]

4.      What has been mentioned regarding the 99 names of Allah

The Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

إِنَّ لِلَّهِ تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ اسْمًا مِائَةً إِلَّا وَاحِدًا مَنْ أَحْصَاهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ

“Indeed Allah has Ninety Nine Names i.e. one less than hundred, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise."
[RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI, BOOK OF CONDITIONS 3:894]

5.      The names of Allah are more than Ninety Nine

The Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

ما قال عبد قط إذا أصابه هم أو حزن :

اللّهم إني عَبدُكَ بنُ عبدِكَ بنُ أمَتِك ناصِيَتِي بِيَدِك

ماضٍ فِيَّ حُكمُك عَدلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُك

أسألُك بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ

سَمَّيتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ أوْ أنْزَلتَهُ في كِتَابِكَ أو علَّمْتَهُ أحدًا مِنْ خَلْقِك

أوِ اسْتَأثَرْتَ بِهِ في علْمِ الغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ

 أن تجعل القرآن ربيع قلبي ونوربصري وجلاء حزني وذهاب همي

إلا أذهب الله همه وأبدله مكان حزنه فرحا

قالوا يا رسول الله ينبغي لنا أن نتعلم هذه الكلمات

قال أجل ينبغي لمن سمعهن أن يتعلمهن

“Any servant of Allah when afflicted with any worry or pain and he says, “O Allah, indeed I am your slave, the O Allaah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You name Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur’aan the life of my heart and the light of my eyes, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety.”  
When he says this Allah will remove his sorrow for him and Allah will change his sorrow into happiness.  
The companions  said, “O Messenger of Allah is it not better for us that we learn these words”     
He  صلى الله عليه وسلم  said, “Yes, It is better for every person who listens to these words to learn them.”
