What Nullifies the Wudhu?

What Nullifies the Wudhu?
1.    Passing wind nullifies the wudhu.[1]
The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said,
"The prayer of a person who does Hadath (passes urine, stool or wind) is not accepted until he performs (repeats) the ablution." A person from Hadaramout[2] asked Abu Huraira, "What is 'Hadath'?" Abu Huraira replied, " 'Hadath' means the passing of wind from the anus**."
**     فُسَاءٌ: passing of wind without sound.
**   ضُرَاطٌ: passing of wind with sound.
[NARRATED BY ABU HURAIRAH رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI (BOOK OF WUDHU) 1:137[3], SAHEEH MUSLIM]
2.    Doubt does not nullify wudhu.
Abdullah bin Zaid bin Aasim رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ  narrated that,
“He asked about a person who imagined to have passed wind during the prayer. Allah' Messenger replied: "He should not leave his prayers unless he hears a sound or smells something."
[NARRATED BY ABDULLAH BIN ZAID رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ , RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI (BOOK OF WUDHU) 1:139, SAHEEH MUSLIM: BOOK OF MENSTRUATION: 702[4]]

The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said,
“If any one of you has pain in his abdomen, but is doubtful whether or not anything has issued from him, be should not leave the mosque unless he hears a sound or perceives a smell.”
[NARRATED BY ABU HURAIRAH رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ , RECORDED IN SAHEEH MUSLIM (THE BOOK OF            MENSTRUATION): 703,   ALSO IN TIRMIDHI]
3.    Sleep nullifies wudhu.
The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said,
“The eyes are the leather straps of the anus, so the one who sleeps should perform ablution.”
[NARRATED BY ALI رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ; RECORDED IN ABU DAWOOD (BOOK OF PURIFICATION): 203[5], AUTHENTICATED (SAHEEH) BY ALBANI IN SAHEEH AL JAAMI: 7117]

Sleep breaks wudhu only it is deep and in which a person looses his awareness. This is implied by the hadith of Anas who said, "The companions of the Prophet were waiting for the delayed night prayer until their heads began nodding up and down (from drowsiness and sleep). They would then pray without performing ablution." (Related by ash-Shaifi, Muslim, Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi.)
[QUOTED FROM FIQH US SUNNAH IN THE SECTION ON “WHAT NULLIFIES WUDHU”]
4.    Drowsiness does not nullify wudhu.
The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said,
"If anyone of you feels drowsy while praying he should go to bed (sleep) until his slumber is over because in praying while drowsy one does not know whether one is asking for forgiveness or for a bad thing for oneself."
[NARRATED BY AISHA رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ا; RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI (THE BOOK OF ABLUTION) 1:211,   SAHEEH MUSLIM]
5.    Vomiting does not nullify wudhu.
Abu Darda’a رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ narrated,
So he broke his fast and when water was brought to him he performed wudhu.”
[NARRATED BY ABU DARDA’A رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ; RECORDED IN MUSNAD AHMED: 26989 AND TIRMIDHI. SHOEB ARNAUT MNETIONS IN HIS COMMENTARY ON MUSNAD AHMED – “THIS HADITH IS SAHEEH”]

“On the basis of this Hadith we can say that it Mustahab (recommended) to do Wudhu after vomiting” (Ibn Taymiyah, Majmoo al Risalil Kubra 2: pg no 234) However to prove that vomiting breaks Wudhu we need a clear command of the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَwhich is not present. For example the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ bathed after fainting. But this does not prove that after a person faints it becomes compulsory to bath.

There is a famous Daeef hadith on this subject. However we cannot prove an issue from a Daeef Hadith. Aisha رضي الله عنها narrates that the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said,
“Whoever vomits or bleeds through the nose, or blurps and food comes out or if Madhi (preseminal fluid) comes out then he should go and do Wudhu (ablution) again, then he should go back and complete whatever is left from his Salah and he should not talk to anyone in between.”
[RECORDED WITH A DAEEF CHAIN OF NARRATION IN SUNAN IBN MAJAH 252, DAEEF AL JAAMI 5426 THE NARRATOR ISMAIL BIN AYASH IN THIS HADITH IS NOT A RELIABLE NARRATOR]
6.     Touching a woman does not nullify wudhu.
"I used to sleep in front of Allah's Messenger with my legs opposite his Qibla (facing him); and whenever he prostrated, he pushed my feet and I withdrew them and whenever he stood, I stretched them." 'Aisha added, "In those days there were no lamps in houses."
[NARRATED BY AISHA رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُا    RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI (VIRTUES OF THE PRAYER HALL (SUTRA OF THE MUSALLA)): 1:492, SAHEEH MUSLIM]
7.    Kissing does not nullify wudhu.
“Allah’s Messenger صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ kissed one among his wives, and then left for salaah and did not perform wudhu”. I (Urwah) said, “It is none other than you”. So she laughed!”
[NARRATED BY URWA’H رحمه الله RECORDED IN IBN MAJAH: 502, ABU DAWOOD, TIRMIDHI, NASAI, MUSNAD AHMED]
8.    Touching the private parts without any barrier or cloth in between nullifies the wudhu.
The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said,
“Whoever touches his private part he must not pray, until he performs wudhu.”
[NARRATED BY BASRAH BINT SAFWAN رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُا    RECORDED IN MAALIK, MUSNAD AHMED, HAAKIM, SUNAN ABU DAWOOD, SUNAN TIRMIDHI, SUNAN NASAI, SUNAN IBN MAJAH, AUTHENTICATED (SAHEEH) BY ALBANI IN SAHEEH AL JAAMI: 6554]

The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said,
“Whoever touches his private part he must perform wudhu and whichever woman touches her private part she must perform wudhu.”
[NARRATED BY IBN AMR رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ; RECORDED IN MUSNAD AHMED, DAARQUTNI, AUTHENTICATED (SAHEEH) BY ALBANI IN SAHEEH AL JAAMI 2725]

R The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said,
“When anyone of you touches towards his private part with his hand while there is no veil neither cover he must perform wudhu like the wudhu of salaah.”
[NARRATED BY ABU HURAIRAH رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ; RECORDED IN ASH-SHAFAI, IBN HIBBAN, DAARQUTNI, HAAKIM, SUNAN AL BAIHAQI,  AUTHENTICATED (SAHEEH) BY ALBANI IN SAHEEH AL JAAMI:362]

Qais narrated from his father Talq bin Ali
“We came a group before the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ . We took the “Bayah” (the oath of Fealty to the Prophetصَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. We offered Salah with the Prophet When he completed Salah a man from the deserts came and asked, “O Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. What do you say about the person who touches his private parts in the state of Salah. The Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said, “That is just a part of your flesh (or a part of you.)”
[RECORDED IN IBN MAJAH, NASAI. AUTHENTICATED (SAHEEH) BY ALBANI IN SAHEEH IBN MAJAH 483]

The correct understanding in the light of the above mentioned hadith is that if a person touches his private parts without any barrier or cloth in between then his wudhu is nullified. However if he touches with cloth in between then wudhu does not brake since it is just “a part of the body” as mentioned in the hadith above.
9.   Al-Madhi (Pre-seminal fluid) nullifies the wudhu.
“I was one whose prostatic fluid flowed readily and I was ashamed to      ask the Messengerصَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ  about it, because of the relation of his daughter. I, therefore, asked Miqdad  bin Aswad and he inquired of him Heصَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ  said: He should wash his male organ and perform ablution.”
The words of Bukhari are “in it is wudhu”
The words of Muslim are “from it is wudhu”
[NARRATED BY ALI رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI, SAHEEH MUSLIM (THE BOOK OF MENSTRUATION):  593]
10.         Eating what has touched the fire does not nullify wudhu.
Abdullah Bin Ibrahim Bin Qaariz رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ narrated that,
“He found Abu Huraira performing ablution in the mosque, who said: I am performing ablution because of having eaten pieces of cheese, for I heard the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ say: “Perform ablution (after eating anything) touched by fire.”

Al-Aqit: is a solid state of milk which is petrified and it is from the things which are touched by fire.
الأثوار is the plural of ‘ثور which means piece of cheese.
[NARRATED BY ABDULLAH BIN IBRAHIM BIN QAARIZ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ; RECORDED IN SAHEEH MUSLIM (THE BOOK OF MENSTRUATION): 687, MUSNAD AHMED, AND NASAI]

“Allah's Messenger ate a piece of cooked mutton from the shoulder region and prayed without repeating ablution.”
[NARRATED BY ABDULLAH BIN ABBAS رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI (THE BOOK OF ABLUTION) 1:206, ALSO IN SAHEEH MUSLIM]
When we have both of the above Hadith in front of us we understand that the statement “Perform ablution (after eating anything) touched by fire.” This is in the form of a recommendation and that it is Mustahab to do Wudhu. But it is not compulsory since the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ offered Salah without repeating his Wudhu after eating cooked mutton. Some scholars hold that the first Hadith is abrogated by the second one. However there is no evidence to say that it it not Mustahab (recommended) anymore. Hence it is not compulsory for a person to do wudhoo after eating cooked food, but it continues to remain recommended for him to do so based on the Hadith of Abu Hurairah
[SIMILAR EXPLANATION HAS BEEN GIVEN BY SHAIKH ABDUR RAHMAN MUBARAKPURI IN “TOHFATUL AHWAZI” VOL 1, BOOK OF TAHARAH, PG NO 219]
11.         Performing wudhu after eating the meat of camel and sheep.
“A man asked Allah’s Messenger صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ “Should I perform wudhu after (eating) the meat of sheep?” He صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said, “Perform wudhu if so desire, and if you do not wish, do not perform it.” He said, “Should I perform wudhu after (eating) camel’s meat?” He صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said, “Perform wudhu after (eating) camel’s meat.”
[NARRATED BY JABIR BIN SAMRAH رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ RECORDED IN SAHEEH MUSLIM]
After eating Camel’s meat wudhu is nullified. This is only for the meat of the Camel not for all meat. For all other meat it is Mustahab to do Wudhu after eating as explained above.
12.         Urinating and excrement nullifies wudhu.
Muhajir Bin Qunfudh رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ  narrated that,
“He went to Allah’s Messenger صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ while he was urinating. He said salaam to him He صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَdid not reply until he performed wudhu, he صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ then apologised to him and said, “Indeed I disliked mentioning Allah without purity.”
[NARRATED BY MUHAJIR BIN رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ; RECORDED IN ABU DAWOOD: BOOK OF PURIFICATION: BOOK 1:17, AUTHENTICATED (SAHEEH) BY ALBANI IN SAHEEH ABU DAWOOD: 13]

And in another narration,
“I went to Allah’s Messenger صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ while he was performing wudhu. I said salaam to him, but he صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ did not give reply for my salaam. When he صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ finished his wudhu, he صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said, “Nothing stopped me from replying you but I was without wudhu”
[RECORDED IN IBN MAJAH, AUTHENTICATED (SAHEEH) BY ALBANI AS-SAHEEHAH: 834]

“The Messenger of Allah used to remember Allah at all times."
[RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI IN THE MUALLAQ FORM, BOOK OF MENSES: IN THE CHAPTER “ THE MENSTRUATING WOMEN WILL DO ALL THINGS DURING HAJJ EXCEPT TAWAAF OF THE HOUSE OF ALLAH.” SAHEEH MUSLIM, TIRMIDHI ]

13.         Bleeding does not break Wudhu
There is no Saheeh Hadith to prove that bleeding breaks Wudhu, nor is there any evidence to prove that if blood flows after coming out this breaks wudhu. Some people quote the hadith mentioned in point 5, but that hadith is Daeef as mentioned there.

Imam Bukhari mentions,
“It is narrated from Jaabir رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ that the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ was in the battle of Zaat ar Riqa. One man got injured with an arrow, still the man did Ruku and Sujud and continued to pray.” Hasan Basri says, “Muslims used to conitinuously offer salah even with their wounds.”

“Ibn Umar sqeezed his pimple and blood came out and he did not repeat his Wudhu.”

Wudhu in the light of Quran & Sunnah

Wudhu in the light of Quran & Sunnah
Introduction:
R Allah says in the Qur’an[1] in Surah Al-Maidah 5:6,
“O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles.”

R The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said,

Chapter 2: Ablution (Wudhu)
1. Virtue of Wudhu and its method in order.
The Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said,
“None of you who uses water for ablution and rinses his mouth, snuffs up water and blows it, but the sins of his face, and his mouth and his nostrils fall out. When he washes his face, as Allah has commanded him, the sins of his face fall out from the end of his beard with water. Then (when) he washes his forearms up to the elbows, the sins of his arms fall out along with water from his finger-tips. And when he wipes his head, the sins of his head fall out from the tips of his hair along with water. And (when) he washes his feet up to the ankles, the sins of his feet fall out from his toes along with water. And if he stands to pray and praises Allah, lauds Him and glorifies Him with what becomes Him and shows wholehearted devotion to Allah, his sins would depart leaving him (as innocent) as he was on the day his mother bore him.”
